Christmas is a time for getting together and playing games, and as a bunch of verified language nerds, what better game to play than our childhood favourite – broken telephone?
Our Managing Director Tina Julsgaard kicks off the fun with the Danish expression Glædelig jul og godt nytår which shifts shape and transforms as it gets passed along our multilingual team, ultimately coming out as something totally incomprehensible.
Not only did we have a great time dressing up and filming our video, but we also think the outcome makes a neat case for the importance of direct communication. It shows that the greater the distance between communicator and recipient, the greater the risk of miscommunication.
That’s been true since the days of playground storytelling and it remains true today in the case of translation between languages!
You might even say our game resembles a form of non-human machine translation but in pure human form. It represents a mechanical approach to translation based on sounds, guesswork and assumptions rather than having the right knowledge and skills in the right place at every step along the way. In that sense, it’s a fun reminder to remember the importance of human translation as we approach 2022!
Once more, we would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year from everyone here at the Comunica team! Or should we say a very glegi güi di du dá!
